February is a golden period for the Chinese film industry, as the first batch of blockbusters will hit cinemas during the Lunar Spring Festival.

It is estimated more than 30 films will squeeze into a tight theater schedule, as February is the month with least number of days.

Nine Chinese films of different genres debut on the same day — Feb 16, the first day of Lunar Spring Festival — a positive sign the Chinese film industry is keeping competition healthy. This also means movie-goers have more potential new favorites to choose from.

Last year, Chinese cinemas took in 3.35 billion yuan ($532 million) in ticket sales during the seven-day Lunar New Year holiday, setting a record high according to official figures released by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television.

Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back, produced by renowned Hong Kong comedian Stephen Chow and directed by Tsui Hark, grossed the most, taking in 1.15 billion yuan over the holiday.

This year, the sequel to fantasy action-adventure film Monster Hunt, the top-earner among domestic films of 2015, and fantasy comedy The Monkey King 3: Kingdom of Women are expected to win big in the Spring Festival box office competition.
