China's P2P streaming video platform PPTV has announced the launch of its Internet-enabled set-top box PPBOX.

Partnered with IPTV operator Wasu Media & Network Co Ltd, the product will intensify the competition for online viewers.

The box is priced at 299 yuan ($48.8), and will go on sale on May 18th in Shanghai, Changsha and Hangzhou.

PPBOX supports 1080p video streaming. It also enables DLNA/Airplay interactive apps, video calling, and a host of downloadable and online games.

As a part of the agreement, PPTV will be responsible for the platform content, technology, and software. Wasu will provide the Internet TV license needed for operation, as well as broadcasting and policy support.

Prior to PPTV, online video portal LeTV.com and cellphone maker Xiaomi Corp were among the first to enter the set-top box market in China. LeTV has even embarked on its namesake Internet TV set.

China's Internet TV market is expected to grow to $1.38 billion in 2016, according to a forecast by consultancy Digital TV Research.
