Bargain hunters in the United States lined up for Black Friday and many camped outside shops on the night of Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, with some stores opening around 5pm to snap up eager early customers.

Retailers offer huge discounts to attract customers on a day commonly regarded as the start of the Christmas shopping season. Beats headphones, televisions and Xboxes were among items attracting buyers, particularly among the young.

An estimated 140 million US shoppers are expected to hit stores and the Internet this weekend in search of price reductions, kicking off what retailers predict will be the best holiday season in three years.
