ABUJA -- Chinese multinational telecommunications equipment and systems firm ZTE on Tuesday reiterated its support for the police in Nigeria in fight against crime in the West African country.

The company made the overture after the surveillance unit was installed by ZTE at the Nigerian Police headquarters in the capital Abuja, saying it has resolved to continually support the security agency through the National Public Security Communications System project.

In 2012, ZTE delivered the NPSCS project to the police through a joint support from the Chinese and Nigerian governments.

"The project enhanced police operation on their daily duties of protecting lives and properties of Nigerians," the company said.

More than 538 local police officers have been trained on various ways of operating the security communications system, it noted.

This was done in line with the company's focus of skill transfer during the project implementation, ZTE added.

With 2,000 cameras built in strategic places in Lagos and Abuja, the central unit of the security communications system has captured so many crime scenes since it was delivered.

The close-circuit cameras were installed to monitor and reduce criminal activities including attacks, kidnappings and killings taking place in different sections of Africa's most populous country.
