BEIJING - Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong has called for more efforts to promote the mountaineering spirit and create more success in sporting field.

Liu, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, made the remarks at a symposium held here on Monday to mark the 50th anniversary of Chinese climbers' first ascent of Mount Qomolangma, the world's highest peak.

"The Chinese mountaineering team, for generations, have shown strong will, bravery and good teamwork since the trio of Wang Fuzhou, Gongbu, Qu Yinhua scaled Mount Qomolangma from the north slope on May 25, 1960 - an unprecedented feat in the history of mankind," Liu said.

"All in the sporting world should take the moutaineers as their role model and strive to make greater achievement," she added.
