BEIJING - Chinese women in 10 surveyed cities make up an average of 35.8 percent of their family incomes, according to the Blue Paper on Women's Lives released Tuesday.

The blue paper was jointly compiled by Women of China, a magazine run by the All-China Women's Federation, Huakun Women's Life Survey Center and Huakun Women's Consumption Guidance Center, and it reflects the results of a survey conducted among 10,000 households in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Taiyuan, Changsha, Dalian, Chengdu, Lanzhou, Ningbo and Harbin.

The average monthly income of the surveyed women amounts to 4,900.7 yuan ($794). The women of Guangzhou, the capital city of south Guangdong province, came out on top, with an average monthly salary of 11,200 yuan, while those from Lanzhou, the capital city of northwest Gansu Province, ranked the lowest, with 2,733 yuan per month on average.

The survey also found that they work an average of 8.4 hours per day.

Moreover, 85.3 percent of the women surveyed said they face pressure at work, and 33.6 percent felt "fair or very grave work pressure." Women in Beijing fared the worst in this regard.

The survey also found that the sources of their stress stem from their workplaces, including compensation below their expectations, fierce competition, high workloads, glass ceilings and difficulties in striking a balance between work and life.
