China rejects British media report on HK press freedom

(Xinhua) Updated: 2014-07-11 19:00

BEIJING - A Foreign Ministry spokesman on Friday reiterated that China opposes any interference by foreign countries in affairs of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

Qin Gang, the spokesman, made the remarks at a regular press briefing in response to a British media report expressing concerns over HKSAR's press freedom.

The success of the "one country, two systems" policy in Hong Kong has been universally acknowledged since its return to the motherland 17 years ago, said Qin.

Compared to 17 years ago, Britain should have a profound understanding that a Hong Kong of lasting prosperity and stability meets the needs of all parties, he said.

He reaffirmed that the affairs of HKSAR are part of China's internal affairs, and China resolutely opposes any interference under any pretext by foreign countries in the affairs of HKSAR.

The spokesman also urged the relevant country to do more that is conducive to the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong.
