The Wolong Giant Panda Base, or Wolong National Natural Reserve, was severely mauled in the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008. After the earthquake, the research center looked into the future of the scientific research and protection of giant pandas and formulated the base reconstruction plan, selected the area from Shenshuiping and Dongkoucao to Huangcaoping of Gengda township in Wolong district, and planned to build the comprehensive base integrating scientific research, artificial breeding and wildness & reintroduction training of the giant pandas.
