With a total population of close to 20 million as of 2014, the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region is among the country's provincial areas faced with the mounting challenges of an aging population.

The country has a total of 2.53 million people who are aged 60 or above as of June 2014, according to the regional authority for elderly people's affairs. However, the region only had 544 nursing homes or aged care centers by the end of 2013, with a total of 40869 hospital beds, according to the elderly people's affairs authority.
