National Library to exhibit New Year's paintings

By Sun Ye ( chinadaily.com.cn ) Updated: 2013-01-31 15:37:33

The National Library of China will host an exhibition of the country's traditional New Year paintings during the Spring Festival holiday.

The library has selected 120 traditional Chinese New Year paintings from its pool of 4,000 pieces. Artisans of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage works are also contributing to the exhibition with art works and on-site demonstrations.

The paintings on display show traditional Chinese holiday decorations, with some inspired by Chinese fairy tales. The oldest pieces go back to the early Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

Featuring lectures, online presentations, videos and oral history material, the exhibition aims to revive the Memory of the Chinese New Year.

"The exhibition is of first-rate quality and reminds us of the customs in danger of dying out," said Wang Haixiao, a researcher with the China National Academy of Arts.
