Cultural crossover

What happens when a Japanese DJ spins a set for dancing Chinese grandmas and a modern Belgium dance crew? You get BCAF's Contemporary Dance by Belgium Artists + Japanese DJ + Square Dance exhibition.

Those fortunate enough to be at the Plaza of Zhongjun World City in Quanzhou got to witness a unique performance which included Japanese DJ Yukke, Belgian dance group Shoes on the Floor Collective, and 200 local Quanzhou square dancers.

First, the dancers spent 20 minutes presenting their skills in modern dancing. Then, the Belgium dancers shared their movies with the Quanzhou square dancers creating a cultural partnership. Finally, DJ Yukke turned the volume up and started mixing speaker bumping minimal techno tracks.

This combination of contemporary and the traditional square dance routine brought smiles to the hundreds of curious people gathering around the stage to take in this incomparable event.

About the Beijing Contemporary Art Foundation

The foundation creates a contemporary urban think tank that gathers innovative ideas. This year, the BCAF presented the China Pavillion at La Biennale di Venezia (Venice, Italy).
