Great wimbledon shockers

China Daily | Updated: 2013-06-26 07:42

Rafael Nadal's stunning first round loss at Wimbledon to world No 135 Steve Darcis on Monday was the latest of many shocking results at the All England Club.

AFP recalls three of the best:

1999

Jelena Dokic v Martina Hingis

- Top seed and world No 1 Martina Hingis was destroyed by 16-year-old qualifier Dokic, who was ranked 129 in the world at the time. Dokic took 54 minutes to beat Hingis, 6-2, 6-0, in the first round.

2002

- Seven-time champion Pete Sampras was stunned 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4 by George Bastl, the world No 145 from Switzerland on the old Court two, the infamous Graveyard of the Champions. Sampras never played the tournament again.

2003

Ivo Karlovic v Lleyton Hewitt

- Karlovic, a 6-foot-10-inch Croatian, ranked 203 in the world, defeated defending champion and top seed Hewitt 1-6, 7-6, 6-3, 6-4. The Australian became the first defending men's champion in the Open era to lose in the first round.
