By Li Shantong, Department of Development Strategy and Regional Economy of DRC & Wu Sanmang, China University of Geosciences

Research Report No 107, 2015 (Total 4792)

Abstract:

Based on data from WIOD, and by using the latest KWW measurement method for calculating added value of foreign trade, this paper gives a calculation of the ability of China's manufacturing industry in acquiring added value in the global value chains division. It indicates that China's manufacturing industry boasts a strong ability to acquire added value in the global value chains and that the intangible share of domestic added value in export is higher than that of world average level and that of major emerging economies, though much lower than that of developed nations including the United States. Besides, the ability of China's manufacturing industry to acquire added value in global value chains division also differs in sectors: labor-intensive sectors tend to enjoy a higher acquisition ability and are getting improved step by step, while the accessibility of capital-intensive and technology-intensive sectors is generally low.
