Comment on "Tobacco control needs stronger smoke signals" (China Daily, May 31)

It is indeed possible and necessary to impose a total ban on smoking in public places in China just like what has been done in countries such as France and England.

Smoking is a serious issue in China because almost 40 percent of the population (including teenagers and women) smokes.

One could not have thought of banning smoking in public places in Europe 20 years ago. But it has been achieved today. Everything is possible if governments have the will.
