Liu Lu, a 22-year-old undergraduate from Central South University was appointed a professor researcher at the university recently and awarded 1 million yuan ($158,500) after he successfully solved the two-decade-old Seetapun Enigma. The university's announcement of his appointment has met with criticism and concern over whether the decision will disturb the normal development of a math genius, says an article in Qilu Evening News. Excerpts:

Compared with those who become professors through personal connections or social status, it is indisputable that Liu who has accomplished a significant achievement should be a university professor researcher. A sound academic evaluation system should break the bad habit of promotion according to seniority instead of talent. But the key to the controversy is whether Liu needs the title now.

It is undeniable that Liu has a long way to go in his academic career and his priority at the moment should be furthering his study instead of teaching at the university. If the university really appreciates talent, it would start from Liu's practical needs and create a better learning environment first. Also, it was Liu's great interest in math and physics that enabled him to conquer the Seetapun Enigma. Once he accepts the title of professor researcher, he will be more responsible for teaching instead of pursuing his interest.

The special appointment of Central South University, which seemingly breaks the rigid rule of employment, has in fact broken the due order in education and academia. It is indeed worrying that the university has lost its confidence and foresight when faced with a genius in the media spotlight.
