The lion awakes, but no need to be scared

By Shang Jun (China Daily) Updated: 2014-12-31 07:48

By trying to build a new model of ties with other major countries, especially the United States, China is trying to break the historical pattern of a zero-sum game between a rising power and an established one, which so often in the past has brought disaster to people.

By putting forward the Silk Road blueprint, China is offering its mass construction capability and foreign reserves for common prosperity with countries that are at similar development stages.

But while Beijing is shouldering more responsibility and playing a more active global role and having a bigger say in international affairs, that doesn't mean there will inevitably be a power struggle with the West, as peace and development will remain the cornerstones of China's diplomatic posture.

As a responsible member of the international community, China is promoting a proper approach to the balance of benefit and justice in international relations, and it always puts righteousness before individual interests for a better world.

Just as Xi said, the awakened China lion is a "peaceful, pleasant and civilized" creature, which has no intention of roaring or showing its claws, and it will never be a threat to anybody unless provoked.
