CANBERRA - The Australian government on Tuesday condemned as a terrible act of extremism a bombing at a Moscow Airport in Russia.

A suspected suicide bombing on Monday afternoon killed at least 35 people and injured more than 100 people, including foreigners, at one of Russia's busiest airports, Domodedovo Airport.

Russian president Dmitry Medvedev has vowed to track down and punish those behind the bombing.

Defense Minister Stephen Smith said it is too early to say whether any Australians have been killed or injured in the attack, and the Australian Embassy in Moscow is in contact with local officials and hospitals.

Smith described the "terrible atrocity" was a feature of modern life.

"We condemn absolutely this terrible act of extremism and of violence," he told ABC Radio on Tuesday. "We are, of course, primarily concerned about any adverse consequences for Australians. "

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has advised concerned family and friends to first make direct contact with anyone they fear might have been at the airport at the time of the bombing.

A British and other foreigners reportedly were among those killed in the blast.
