BEIJING - US President Barack Obama reiterated on Wednesday that the United States does not support "independence" of Taiwan and Tibet.

He made the remarks when meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Obama said there has been no change of the US stance on Taiwan and it does not support "Taiwan independence."

The U.S. favors the improvement of cross-Straits relations and expects it to continue, he said.

The U.S. acknowledges Tibet as part of the People's Republic of China and does not back "Tibet independence," he added.

Obama arrived in Beijing Monday to attend the 22nd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting and pay a state visit to China at Xi's invitation.
