South Korean suspected of Ebola hospitalized in Berlin

(Xinhua) Updated: 2015-01-04 09:01

BERLIN - A South Korean health worker suspected of Ebola is admitted on Saturday to Berlin's Charite, one of the largest university hospitals in Europe, said Berlin Senate Department for Health and Social Affairs on Saturday.

A member of the South Korean medical team that was in Sierra Leone in action against Ebola has been admitted to the special isolation of the Charite University Medicine Berlin.

It should first be examined whether the person was infected with Ebola virus.

The health worker is believed to have been infected by the virus while collecting blood from an Ebola patient.

However, so far, the worker has shown no disease symptoms and is thus not contagious, said Berlin Senate Department for Health and Social Affairs.

"The medical and nursing staff of our special isolation is specially trained to care for people with highly infectious diseases," said Prof. Ulrich Frei, Medical Director of the Charite.

The worker will be monitored at an isolated unit for 21 days, the maximum incubation period of the virus.
