NZ to work with UN on dealing with foreign terrorist fighters

(Xinhua) Updated: 2015-05-28 16:05

WELLINGTON - New Zealand Attorney-General Christopher Finlayson said Thursday the country would continue international cooperation to deal with the problem of foreign terrorist fighters.

Finlayson said in statement before traveling to New York today to attend the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Open Briefing on foreign terrorist fighters that New Zealand, along with other nations, was facing complex issues related to the radicalization, recruitment and travel of foreign terrorist fighters.

Lithuania would chair the briefing to assess the progress made towards implementing Security Council Resolution 2178 (2014), which specifically addressed foreign terrorist fighters.

"We welcome the UNSC's continuing leadership on this matter and look forward to working with the international community to identify best practice measures," Finlayson said.

The briefing would also build on the work that took place at the Countering Violent Extremism Summit held in Washington earlier this year.
