BEIJING -- President Xi Jinping met with Papua New Guinea (PNG) Governor-General Michael Ogio on Tuesday, with both vowing more cooperation between their countries.

Xi welcomed Ogio for his attendance of the upcoming commemorations of the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.

He thanked the PNG government and people for their maintenance of a cemetery for Chinese war dead in Rabaul, PNG.

China and PNG have supported each other and cooperated for mutual benefit and common development since the establishment of diplomatic relations, according to the president. The two countries have held exchanges in areas of trade, investment, agriculture, education and health.

China is willing to work with PNG to organize more exchanges and strengthen dialogue, said the president.

Xi views the two countries' economies as highly complementary to each other, and he suggested the two sides integrate their development strategies.

He expressed appreciation for PNG's efforts in boosting regional cooperation among Pacific Islands nations, saying China supports the country as the host of an APEC summit in 2018.

China is also willing to communicate more with PNG on such major issues as sustainable development and climate change and jointly safeguard the interests of developing nations, the president said.

Ogio agreed that since the establishment of diplomatic ties more than 30 years ago, PNG's relationship with China has been strong.

He voiced appreciation for China's help, saying PNG is wiling to deepen cooperation with China.
